Review: Deception by Aleatha Romig

5 Complex and Enrapturing Stars

Romig has spun a wicked tale of lies, love and deceit; and, like a moth to a flame, I am completely enraptured. I cannot for the life of me walk away. I just keep begging for more and more of this author’s powerful words.

For every question answered—more sprang forth. Deception is filled with just that. Key players appear to be showing their true colors, but are they? Do we really know anyone? Can we really trust any of these characters? I just don’t know.

Romig’s writing is one of a true expert. Her novels are filled with twisting tales and uncovering secrets– a true smoke and mirrors show with a delicious end. Just when you think you know what is going on the rug is pulled out from under you, leaving you distraught: in a state of loss and reasoning. Deception is no exception to this.

It took me days to truly unravel this novel and I am ok with that. Like a fine wine, Romig’s books should be savored. A true rich red: Complex, opulent and refined, leaving that kick in the back of your throat and bringing you back again and again trying to decipher exactly what you have just consumed.

Until September, my friends. The wait is on. 136 days until Entrapment is released into the world. 136 DAYS!!! How will we cope until then?

**I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.**

Excerpt

Maybe this job won’t be completely god-awful after all. At least, that’s what I’m thinking when I turn up the sunny, tree-lined avenue surrounded by depressingly beige cinder-block apartment buildings. Every few houses is a “hotel” that looks exactly like its neighboring apartments, the kind of hotels that would be no stranger to providing in-home entertainment, complete with a happy ending.

This is no neighborhood for a lady. Especially not the lady I imagine from the photos Topknot included in the file.

There’s something about Sloan’s face in those pictures. Her body is fucking magazine-perfect, if anyone in the fashion industry had eyeballs and allowed women to look the way they should in magazines—curvy and luscious, with tits I’d need both hands to squeeze, and the kind of ass you want to dive into, like a pinup from back in the day when they knew what real women looked like.

But it’s her face that makes her stick in my mind, even now as I’m creeping down her block keeping my eyes peeled for Morton’s, the diner where she works. Even in the few candid shots that Topknot managed to take of her while she busied herself pouring coffee around the diner, leaning against tables to chat with older couples, a huge smile on her cupid-bow lips, there’s this look in her pale green eyes (eyes I’ve never seen on anyone before, so clear they could pass for a gemstone, eyes that have to be fake, contacts or some shit). One photo in particular, of her facing Topknot’s table, smiling over the lens’s head (probably taking Topknot’s order, unaware of the hidden camera strapped to his body somewhere), captures a longing in her eyes. She’s smiling, but in her head, she’s somewhere else. Somewhere happy. Somewhere her loser gambling addict of a brother won’t make her work her ass off while he hoards his pile of ill-earned gains.

Yes, we were checking that girl out.

No, you don’t want to meet her parents.

And no, ladies, we don’t care what shoes you wear – as long as they’re up around our neck by the end of the night.

Life was simple, until fate brought me back together with Jessie.

My best friend’s younger sister, who I just happened to have the hottest one night stand of my life with four years ago.

Who calls me at 3 AM to get bailed out of jail.

Who I can’t keep my hands off of.

And who can never find out who I really am.

She’s off-limits, but I don’t care. And when I need a fake girlfriend to help me out of a jam at work, she’s the only one who can help. Now I’m stuck sharing a hotel room with her for the weekend.

A long, sexy weekend.

This is your Bad Boy, signing off.

Chapter 1

Nate
I start taking off my clothes as soon as I’m through the door of my apartment. Shirt on the floor, kicking my shoes off, down to my underwear. I go into the bathroom and splash some water on my face, glaring at myself in the mirror.
There’s a rush that happens when I’m about to make a video. Not the cock-stiffening hotness of seducing a woman, not quite the intellectual satisfaction of closing a six-figure deal for work that I had no right to – it’s something else. Something I still can’t figure out. It’s a catharsis and a comfort, a deep feeling of fulfilment I’ve never quite gotten from anything else.
I boot up my laptop and sit on the edge of the bed while I wait, taking out the candles my female fans love and lighting them so they cast an incandescent hue over my body, the lines of my chest coming alive in the flickering black shadows.
I’ve asked myself a million times why I carry on making these videos. I don’t need the money, and all it would take is for a girl to recognize me, or for a slip to happen, and I’d be discovered. If that ever happened I’d probably enter a world of problems. Work would suck – if I could even keep my job – and I’m still not sure if it would help or ruin my sex life.
But something brings me back, something deep inside of me. It’s not quite the ego-boost – I’m self-aware enough to admit that – and it’s not even the idea of helping people – I’m not that altruistic. Again and again though, whatever it is still compels me to sit here, stare into that lens, and talk. And it’s not the kind of bullshit I roll with at work- it’s the truth. Maybe that’s the part I’m addicted to. The part where there are no boundaries, no rules. Where I can tap into the deepest, darkest part of what it means to be a man, to lust and to hunt and to conquer. All amid the liberating joy of anonymity.
I set the angle right with focused precision, just below my mouth, nothing visible in the frame but my chiseled torso, the waistband of my Calvin Kleins, and the blank wall behind me, and then I press record.
Confessions of a Bad Boy #234: The best one-night stand I’ve ever had

It’s the Bad Boy here. Bringing you more illicit confessions from the steamy shadows, tales of torn panties and roving tongues. I’ve got to say, some of the messages I’m getting from you guys are out there – especially the women. I’m sure I’ve met a few of you out in the wild before. Just keep ‘em coming, as I like to say.

A bunch of you keep asking me to tell you about the best one-night stand I’ve ever had, since I’ve got my method down to a science. It’s a tough question. One-night stands are always good if you know what you’re doing. Each one is unique, different, its own little adventure. That’s why I keep coming back, why I keep doing it. That’s why I’ve made so many videos on the topic. But that’s no answer, and you know I hate to leave you hanging…

So I’m gonna tell you about a one-night stand that might just be the best – it was definitely the most unexpected, the most unplanned, and the most dangerous. The one that I still think about sometimes, however much I try not to…

EXCERPT:

“You’re calling me naive?”
“Yes.” She leaned forward. “You may be older than me, but you’re still the noble Irin
warrior of ages past. This world is not black and white. It never has been.”
“You think I don’t know that?”
“You think every scribe has a conscience and a code of honor because you do.”
He looked away from her.
“Not every scribe is noble. Not every Irin wants the Irina back. Not every one of your
brothers would sacrifice himself to protect me or any of my sisters.”
“I know I’m no saint. None of us are.”
“No, you’re honorable. And decent. And good.”
“Sari—”
“And I love that about you,” she continued, even as her throat started to close. “I love your
honor. I love your decency. But Damien, the world is not like that. It’s a hard, cruel place
with countless shades of grey. People are selfish and weak. We do things…” She choked.
“We do horrible things because we think it’s the only way to survive.”
Damien turned back to her. “There is nothing you can do that would make me love you
less, Sari.”
She gave him a bitter smile. “That’s because you don’t know what I’ve done.”

Release Blitz: When I’m with You by Harper Sloan

WhenImWithYou_FrontCover_LoResNate:

It’s nearly impossible to be surrounded by love but not understand it. My parents, my sister, and just about everyone around us has no trouble accepting that love. To give your trust to someone else and believe they would die before hurting you. I’ve witnessed it—I’ve seen the power of it—but I’ve also seen the pain. Because for me, I’ve only loved someone I could never have, and my biggest fear is that by giving her my love, all I would do is ruin her. I should have tried harder, but I’m not sure I can because I only feel complete when I’m with her.

Emberlyn:

The only time I feel like I belong is when he’s near. His infectious smile warms me straight to my bones. Any insecurities I have vanish with just a wink from him. A sliver of his attention makes me feel invincible. But all it took was one drunken night of truths for me to lose everything I had begun to crave. Now, I’m not sure how to move on because I only feel complete when I’m with him.

He said I was too young. I said he was perfect. He said our families wouldn’t understand. I said we could weather any storm. He said he would ruin me. And he was right.

Excerpt – Come Together

As the elevator ascended, David’s body seemed to grow bigger, his bearing predatory. I was his cornered prey—and he was about to strike. After a charged moment, he nodded at the doors. “Go on.” In my thickening haze of anticipation, I hadn’t even noticed our arrival at the penthouse. “We’re late for a very important date,” he said.

“And what date is that?” I asked as we stepped off.

“You, me and nothing else. Leave everything at the door.” He unlocked the apartment and held it open so I could pass through before him. As I did though, he snatched my elbow. “I said everything.”

Over my shoulder, my gaze met his brown eyes, dark and lusty. He let the door slam to merge his body against my backside, gripping my shoulders roughly in his hands. “I’ve been crazy for you all day,” he rasped in my ear. “And although I love this nude dress, I want it off. Now.” He dragged the zipper down and dropped to his knees. I gasped when his lips touched the base of my spine. His hands skated up my exposed back and slid over my shoulders, releasing the gown so it slumped at my feet. They came around to my front, where he spread his fingers across my stomach. A moan vibrated against the small of my back, sending a shiver up to my shoulders.

He stood and wrapped an arm around my chest, his hardness pressing against my spine. His other hand dropped to pull me open by my inner thigh and touch me through my underwear. I was panting, swaying when he released me suddenly. “Jesus,” he muttered.

“I can’t control myself with you.”

Through oversized windows, the city glow lent the only light to the room as he circled in front of me. I put my hand in his and stepped out of the dress, following as he led me down the stairs into the sunken living room.

“Keep those on,” he instructed, motioning to my new black stilettos. He removed his blazer and lit the fireplace as my body, alive with desire, wavered unsteadily in the four-inch heels. He emptied his pockets onto a side table and removed his Rolex. He undid his bowtie slowly with his hooded eyes fixed on me. His limbs, strong and brawny, moved fluidly as he shed clothing. I wanted to learn the contours of his body with my eyes, my fingers, my tongue. And when he looked at me that way, like it was the first time, I could barely help from melting at his feet.
